THE CRJ550: BACK IN HIGH DEMAND FOR PREMIUM REGIONAL TRAVEL

Regional aviation is evolving, and so are passenger expectations. While the industry has long debated the future of 50-seat regional jets, the CRJ550 is proving that not only do premium small-capacity aircraft still have a place, but they are making a comeback.
Designed to balance regional demand with a superior onboard experience, the CRJ550 is reshaping how airlines approach shorter-haul flights by combining comfort, efficiency, and premium service in a way that smaller aircraft traditionally have not.
A UNIQUE SOLUTION FOR TODAY’S MARKET DEMAND
Traditional 50-seat jets like MHIRJ’s CRJ200 and Embraer’s ERJ 145 have played a crucial role in connecting smaller communities and markets, spearheading regional aviation as we know it today. The problem is many of these jets will eventually retire and no viable 50-seat aircraft replacements currently exist, or are in planning. That’s exactly where the CRJ550 comes in.
The CRJ550 addresses this challenge, plus it provides a more spacious, upscale alternative. Many may recall that GoJet Airlines was the first to introduce a premium on-board experience around five years ago. Alongside their partner, United Express, they led the way with a unique cabin configuration. The CRJ550 uses a CRJ700 aircraftairframe, which has a maximum capacity of 78 seats, and configured it with only 50. The result was more legroom per seat than any other 50-seater aircraft in the market.
“The CRJ550 allows you to operate a true 50-seat airplane that fits under the small Regional Jet scope clause, but it also allows you to introduce premium traffic to a premium product on those routes,” said Ross Mitchell, MHIRJ Senior Vice-President, Strategy and Business Development. “So, it's really solving a couple of problems.”
In a major shift this past Fall, SkyWest also began operating 11 CRJ550s for United Express. This marks a significant expansion beyond the aircraft’s original exclusivity with GoJet. By incorporating the CRJ550 into its regional fleet, SkyWest is enhancing United’s ability to provide a consistent, high-quality experience for premium travellers across key regional markets. Clearly, a 50-seat regional route is in high demand and the CRJ550 is the optimal product for it.
But that’s not all, Delta Connection has also added the 50-seat jet on routes out of its Detroit hub, making it the third CRJ550 hub for the regional airline. Over the last few months, they have introduced CRJ550s on flights out of their hubs at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP).
“It allows you to make sure you're getting a high value passenger who's connecting onto a wide body aircraft. You’re providing them with a true premium experience before they get onto that connecting traffic,” added Mitchell.
PASSENGER COMFORT AS A PRIORITY
Unlike its predecessors, the CRJ550 offers an elevated onboard experience, featuring 10 first-class seats, 20 Economy Plus seats, and 20 standard economy seats. With added amenities such as an onboard snack bar, increased baggage capacity, and greater legroom, it ensures that passengers enjoy a seamless and comfortable journey.
The CRJ550 leverages the airframe of the CRJ700 while adhering to the scope clause requirements, which limit the number of passengers a regional aircraft can carry and the maximum take-off weight of the aircraft. Currently, the cap for small regional jets is 50 passengers and 65,000 pounds maximum take-off weight. The CRJ550 satisfies both requirements by reducing the seat count and the maximum take-off weight.
Even though the aircraft operates with a lower seat count, its premium configuration allows carriers to maximize revenue through higher-yield passengers. It allows the airlines to capture premium traffic on routes where using previous 50-seat regional jets was not possible. Premium passengers want to receive the same premium experience which they experience get on large aircraft, and the CRJ550 satisfies that desire.
A MODEL FOR THE FUTURE
As regional airlines seek sustainable growth strategies, the CRJ550 offers a compelling path forward. By blending efficiency with an upgraded passenger experience, it is proving that premium regional travel is not just possible, it’s the future. At MHIRJ, we’ll continue playing a critical role in supporting the CRJ Series fleet to ensure that operators can maximize the reliability and longevity of their aircraft.
