CONVERSATIONS WITH OUR LEADERS: STEPHANIE BENTO, MHIRJ
The key role advocacy plays in supporting regional air service and workforce development is explained by Stephanie Bento, our Government & Industry Affairs Lead at MHIRJ, who shares how collaboration across industry and government is helping build a stronger aviation system.
Stephanie: Hi, Stephanie Bento here from MHIRJ Government Affairs. What an honor it is this week to be in Washington, D.C., and to hear directly from policymakers, legislators, and industry leaders, and to keep them closely connected with our company, discussing what's most important in our industry right now. We're looking at the major challenges and opportunities ahead of us.
MHIRJ: What are the major challenges and opportunities currently facing the aviation industry?
Stephanie: Something that we're learning from our community at ATEC, which represents our community of schools across the nation, is that we really need to continue training our students to bridge the gap between new skill technicians coming into the industry and very tenured, very well-established senior technicians. On-the-job training, apprenticeship programs, and connecting students to employers will continue to be the priority in the foreseeable future to ensure a robust pipeline of talent for aviation maintenance.

MHIRJ: Why is the Regional Airline Association important to MHIRJ and its customers?
Stephanie: The Regional Airline Association is very close to heart with us, because all of our major customers are here, and we're very happy to be here with them, connect with them, talk about what they're seeing on their side with domestic demand being at an all-time high, how we're supporting them, and how we can advocate for solutions from the administration to help support regional air service.
The great majority of our national transportation system relies on regional air service for connectivity to small rural communities, and we are here proudly advocating for that. We stand strongly behind the RAA and all its efforts, advocating for regional air service.
MHIRJ: What advocacy efforts are being made to support our growing industry?
Stephanie: We met with Senator Mark Kelly, a strong supporter of the aviation community, who sees the industry as a key economic driver for the state of Arizona. We also have ongoing discussions with our legislators in West Virginia. We had great discussions on both sides. They’re very much engaged with us.
We're very proud to be having these discussions, and we look forward to continued collaboration so that we can continue to grow our industry and respond to the high demand we're seeing from the customer side. We want to work together, support them and grow together.
MHIRJ: What's the vision for a stronger aviation system to meet growing demand?

There has also been a significant willingness to fund workforce grants and apprenticeships, and we're grateful to the RAA and ATEC for the advocacy efforts they've made throughout the years to make these initiatives happen.
It takes a team effort for all of this to work, and we're all here united, working together to find solutions and build a stronger system that can continue to grow and meet the demands of our expanding networks.
