Last week, we welcomed students from Walden Grove High School to our Tucson facility as part of their involvement in the Choose Aerospace program, a curriculum that introduces high schoolers to aviation maintenance and aerospace careers.

PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH OPPORTUNITY

The visit was part of the students’ learning journey, where classroom concepts meet real-world applications. Through Choose Aerospace, these students are gaining foundational knowledge in avionics, safety protocols, and maintenance procedures. Touring MHIRJ gave them an opportunity to see those lessons in application and connect with professionals working in the aviation industry.

“We actually helped spearhead this Choose Aerospace curriculum at Sahuarita [Walden Grove High School], also in Vail, and now trying to get to Marana…this is the first year we’ve had curriculum in the schools,” said Andrew Bevington, Director of Business & Education Partnerships from Pima County School Superintendent’s Office in Tucson, Arizona.

BUILDING THE FUTURE OF AVIATION

These programs help address the shortage of aviation technicians and professionals by giving students access to education that introduces training, technical skills, and aviation knowledge.

“The goal is to build high school pipelines to feed this industry because we know it’s chronically understaffed,” Bevington said.

AVIATION CAREER PATHWAYS

During their time at our facility, students were given access to our hangar and got a behind-the-scenes look at how aircraft maintenance and repair operations are carried out. They met with the Tucson Director of Operations, Talent Acquisition Leaders, and Operations Managers who shared insights into the different career paths and skills needed to succeed in aviation.

“We’re proud to support the next generation of aviation professionals by opening our doors to the community and students of Choose Aerospace programs. Opportunities like this not only help build a pipeline of skilled talent but also inspire young people to pursue careers in a field full of growth and opportunity,” said Adrian Hitz, Tucson Director of Operations.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES AT MHIRJ

For many students, this was their first time inside a working facility, and it left a strong impression.

“I loved seeing all the components of the airplanes and how things are set up,” said Toby Terrell, a Walden Grove student who hopes to work in aviation as a mechanic or technician one day.

“I was really excited for this class and to come here,” said Ashlynn McDermott, another Walden Grove student. McDermott, who was unable to secure a spot in the Aircraft Mechanic 1 class last year, was more than excited to join this year’s class to support her goal of eventually working in aeronautical engineering and aircraft maintenance.

“I’ve been planning on this since I was really young, so it was cool to actually be in a facility and see it all,” said McDermott.

We’re grateful to Walden Grove High School and representatives of Pima County for making this visit possible, and we look forward to seeing where these students go next. We hope their experience at MHIRJ inspired curiosity and confidence in their future.
